Glasgow and Edinburgh have long been popular for Scottish city breaks - but there are several other destinations you could consider instead. Inverness in the Highlands is one such location. It has grown from being a simple ancient fort to the region's capital with a population of around 65,000 people. A good way to see the city is by taking an open-topped bus ride - something that is particularly great in the summer - and you will also find that there are many cultural sights and sounds here, all based on Aberdeen's Gaelic roots.
Take part in whirling reels and jigs at pub ceilidhs, listen out for the strains of pipers playing Scottish bagpipe music and enjoy lots of contemporary dance, drama and theatre for an authentic taste of the city's culture. If you're looking for good restaurants, you will be spoilt for choice. You will find you can enjoy both Highland and international cuisine and also spend some time in one of the continental-style cafe bars and pubs that call Aberdeen home. You should also make sure you visit St Andrew's Cathedral, a stunning old building that is certainly worth taking the time to discover. It has a tearoom that is ideal for resting after a long day of sightseeing.
Alternatively, why not consider heading to Aberdeen instead? There is so much to do around here that you are sure to want to return time and time again to experience its unique atmosphere. For a perfect day in this part of Scotland, make sure you head to one of the many museums and galleries to be found in the Granite City. The marble-lined Aberdeen Art Gallery is particularly interesting and is home to plenty of contemporary displays and exhibitions of works by the Scottish Colourists and the Impressionists. Fancy a spot of shopping? The main avenue of Union Street would be a great place to start.
Here, you will find one mile of bars, stores and restaurants, while The Bon Accord Centre could also be another good option for retail therapy. To finish a great day out, you will need to find an excellent restaurant. For good food and jazz, head to The Albyn, although the Olive Tree Restaurant in the west end could also be a good choice if you're a fan of Mediterranean fare.
These are just a few of the alternative city-based Scottish hotel break options available away from Glasgow and Edinburgh - why not book your getaway today?
